My thoughts on it all
I’m glad there helping rid the web of malicious things!

As a web developer one other thing I would love to see Google tackle is spam from gmail accounts I used to have loads of spammers signing up with hotmail, yahoo, msn… These I no longer have trouble with the mail email I have trouble with is gmail I manage many sites & I can say 8 times out of 10 I get spammers joining with a gmail account.

I myself use gmail I also use Google apps to host my domains emails I really love gmails features & wish they would find away to crack down on that or have a spam report area for gmail accounts.

If I wasn’t a user of gmail & if I didn’t like the social feature of Google and gmail I would be half tempted to block it completely I have seen a few site do this and I find that kinda sad.

Whats your thoughts on gmail spammers & Google detecting malware on your system? I have a few I’ll try to find the time to put them into words maybe a pro’s & con’s of it all

Pretty Cool Twitter Plugin that does a great deal of work!

I’ve been using Simple Twitter Connect for a good while now. I find it very helpful and pretty easy to use I did have to add the code into my sight but that wasn’t very difficult to do.

The reason I’m doing a short post about this is I’ve seen so many plugins these past few month that seem to self promote A bit to much This one does not do that it does as described no more & no less!

How to use Twitter on your Mobile Phone

First you need to activate your cell phone with Twitter I would also un-check the let people find me by my number

Text Messaging on Twitter

Setting up your phone allows you to:

Send tweets with text messaging on your phone.
Receive texts for DMs and the tweets from users you want to be notified about.

Clicking the phone icon on a users profile page or your followers page sets Tweet notifications for that user.

I on the other hand think it is still very important for many reasons!

Missing alt tags in images can hurt your sites (SEO) Search Engine Optimization / Rankings and visibility they are also used for people with disabilities that may need a screen reader to view the world wide web.

After all if you have a site built it should be usable for everyone not just a percentage of people. It should be readable through all major browsers not just one.

OK I had spent many days & nights looking for a simple yet powerful Testimonials Plugin. Most I came across just didn’t seem practical or they seemed dead with no support, or you had to add them manually and really who has time for that?

I came across a Free WordPress Plugin by: Chinmoy Paul, chinmoy29 that worked awesome & also offered a pro-version It seemed to have great support and updates & visitors can add the testimonials themselves (Pro-version only) so that was great as well

So if you have been pulling your hair out looking for a testimonials plugin look no further!!

I just wanted to write a little post mentioning some of the tools I use to work on sites & keep things in order as a web developer. Below you’ll find programs that are ran on my laptop and desktop along with some neat web based solutions to help you manage and maintain you business and sanity

Gimp Free Program

As for images I use Gimp “GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.” So drop by http://www.gimp.org/ and check it out!

Passwordsafe Free Program

I also use PasswordSafe so I can manage all my site log-ins in a nice neat & Safe way!

FileZilla Free FTP Program

I use Filezilla to manage all my file transfers.

Notepad++

Notepad++ is a handy tool to have for debugging & editing

Twitter.com to get a new Look

It look as though Twitter will be getting a new look soon. You can preview it when you log into you account, and then switch back to the style we are all used to. It may take the new look a little bit to grow on me LOL But All in All I like it (I just need to find the block and spam button) and I’ll be fine LOL

What to Look for in a Web Developer or Designer

I’ve seen many pretty looking sites on the internet The first thing a person see’s when going to visit your site is a well laid out site. Thing is they need to be able to find your site. The site should be easy to maneuver and should be made easy to read, text and menu’s. Now thats just for the looks of it, there’s way more to a site than looks although looks are ranked up there a good bit.

The site should be cross checked across multiple browsers for instance my sites visitors have been using these browsers to view my site, (Click image below for a larger view)

meta tags?!? What is that? well it looks a bit like this….

This one here tells search engines and other linking services what your site is all about…

The one below here tells search engines Hey if some one enters “affordable web design” into Google my sites has those relevant ”KEYWORDS” so odds are some where with in those search results your page will be seen.

as for the link bit here is a snap shot of this site when someone goes to link it on FaceBook

What did it pick up it grabbed a few thumbnails from my site, It grabbed the meta name=”description” & it grab the Site Title If those aren’t in your html Then it will really hurt your search ranking and your visibility…

If you have a site and want to check to make sure those are in your HTML files You can…

in most browsers you can right click & click view source (if the site hasn’t got right click disabled) If they do have it disabled you can in IE8 go to view & then click source in the menu of the browser…

For Google Chrome in the top right the little paper looking thing click that then developer then view source..

For Firefox go to view then to page source…

These are some basic things a good web developer or designer should do, Also make sure all images have alt tags, Don’t over use H1 tags and try to avoid stop words…

These are frequently occurring words that are ignored when typed into a search engine. Here are a few examples: An, The, A, Of.

If a stop word is typed at the beginning of a title, this will often stop the search all together, so try to avoid that.

Always make sure your content is relevant to the titles and you should see better rankings in no time
